Introduction to Latent Fingerprinting

This 8-hour seminar is a combination of instructor presentation and instructor supervised practical exercises to provide students with the ability to successfully develop and preserve latent fingerprints using the basic brush and powder method. Topics covered in this course include:

The History of Fingerprints                               Terms & Definition

Skin Structure & Latent Prints                          Types of Latent Prints

Basic Fingerprint Patterns                                 Fingerprint Details Used for Identification

Types of Powders and Brushes                        Brush & Powder Development Techniques

Practical Exercises                                             Introduction to AFIS

Advanced Development Techniques (magnetic powders, small particle reagents, superglue, ninhydrin)

Instructor:  Ken Binder is a Specialist Sergeant Latent Print Unit Michigan State Police Forensic Science Division Bridgeport Laboratory.  He has testified as an expert witness in many court cases tying individuals to their crimes through latent fingerprints left at the scene.
