In too many communities, the problems in-waiting for police/community relations range from offensive missteps to serious issues of misconduct and criminal behavior, with legal repercussions. The problems may occur because many officers and staff have backgrounds that provided only limited, stereo typical information and limited exposure to people with backgrounds different from their own. Too often, the bulk of their exposure to people from other cultures occurs only in potentially harmful situations. Building anti-bias skills advances their professionalism and enables them to build mutually beneficial relationships within the communities they serve.
This class builds on the knowledge and skills gained in cultural sensitivity training by applying them to resolve cross-cultural conflicts in ways that are fair, respectful and effective in de-escalating the conflict.
