Although our American courtrooms are supposed to be a sanctuary of civility and order, they have become the scene of many violent attacks and prisoner escape attempts in the past decade. These episodes have many times led to safety concerns and fear of safety for those present. Additionally, they have reflected negatively on our public safety agencies. This course will help prepare officers working in our courtrooms for these and other critical incidents. Transport preparation and prisoner transportation security issues will also be covered. Highlights on judicial protection and threat management will be discussed.

Instructor: Sergeant Todd Gilchrist is a 24 year veteran of the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office. Over his career with the Sheriff’s Office Todd has worked as a Corrections Deputy and Sergeant. For 7 years Todd managed the Sheriff’s Offices Court Services and Transport Division and is now supervising Correctional Operations. Todd has also served as an Interim Jail Administrator.
Todd has been involved in public safety since 1989 as a fire fighter and EMT. He began his career in public safety education in 1993 as an EMS Instructor Coordinator and in the early 2000’s as a Law Enforcement Instructor. Todd is an adjunct Instructor at West Shore Community College and Lake Michigan College. He has also presented multiple topics at the American Jail Association’s national conferences.
Todd serves on the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council Advisory Committee. He is also an Instructor for the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council at the Academy level and for in-service training throughout Michigan.
