Michigan Autism Safety Training (MAST)

An Autism Alliance of Michigan Safety Initiative 

This course is designed to teach officers how to identify characteristics of persons with autism and effective approaches to interacting with individuals with autism.  Participants will also receive information on available local and state resources to help the person with autism and their family / care provider.

Law enforcement and public safety personnel attending this training will:

  • Expand their knowledge of autism and related behaviors.
  • Increase their recognition skills of persons with autism.
  • Acquire information and tips on how to safely and effectively interact with individuals with autism and their family / care provider.
  • Learn about community outreach strategies that will increase support and safety of those with autism.

 

Instructor:  Joel Maatman is the Autism Safety Specialist/Trainer for the Autism Alliance of Michigan. Mr. Maatman has over 40 years of law enforcement experience.  He is a retired Lieutenant from the Lansing Police Department and also retired from the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office as a Major.  Mr. Maatman has been an Autism Safety Trainer since 2017 and a big supporter of Autism Training for Law Enforcement since 2011.

MAST is endorsed by the Michigan Association of Chiefs of Police and the Michigan Sheriffs’ Association

There are two (2) sessions on this date, 10am – 1pm or 4pm – 7pm.

Cost:  Certified members – no cost, Non-certified members $25 p/p, All others $35 p/p
