Games Inmates Play & Correctional Influence

Inmate Manipulation and the influence correctional officer have over inmates is intertwined as part of our everyday operations.  Inmate Manipulation can be the most dangerous part of a correctional officer’s career.   Inmates have nothing to lose by luring an officer into their tangled web of games.  This one mistake can ruin an officer career as well as put the entire facility at risk for officer assaults, escapes and inmate deaths.  Couple inmate manipulation with how a Correctional Officers manage the inmate within their span of control and our correctional facilities can be a time bomb waiting to explode.  By using Influential skills to help guide how we interact with inmates it is certain garner a safe and secure facility.

This class will explore some of the tactics used by the inmates we deal with day in and day out and educate or even refresh officers in the dangers of falling victim to the inmate’s game of manipulation.  It will also allow correctional officers to explore new a management styles known as Correctional Influence.   The management style will help officers shift away from totalitarian environment to positive influential environment.

Instructor:  Todd Gilchrist, is a 24 year veteran of the Muskegon County Sheriff’s Office.  Over his career with the Sheriff’s Office Todd has worked as a Corrections Deputy and Sergeant.  For 7 years Todd managed the Sheriff’s Offices Court Services and Transport Division and is now supervising Correctional Operations.  From 2014-2017, during the build of a new jail facility; Todd also served as an Interim Jail Administrator.  He began his career in public safety education in 1993 as an EMS Instructor Coordinator and in the early 2000’s as a Law Enforcement Instructor.  Todd is an adjunct Instructor at West Shore Community College and Lake Michigan College.  He has also presented multiple topics at the American Jail Association’s national conferences.

Todd serves on the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council Advisory Committee.  He is also an Instructor for the Michigan Sheriffs’ Coordinating and Training Council at the Academy level and for in-service training throughout Michigan.

Cost:  MCOLES certified members:  free     Non-certified members:  $50.00 per person

All others:  $95.00 per person
