Digital Technology in Criminal Investigations

As technology continues to become such a prevalent part of our daily lives, it is also becoming an integral part of criminal investigations.  Current estimates show that there are more cellular devices in the world that there are people.  In addition, with the inception of social media and subsequent massive expansion of its use, law enforcement is beginning to utilize these platforms to enhance their investigative capabilities.

The purpose of this two-day class is to familiarize law enforcement and prosecutors, with techniques, devices and programs that can be utilized to extract digital data for criminal investigations.  Additionally, what can be done in a “forensic examination” and what are the legal constraints when dealing with digital evidence.

Instructor:    Joseph Burns of the Clinton Township Police Department.  Joseph is a CTF / SVCE / Oxygen, CCO / CCPA forensic cell phone examiner.  He has been trained by the FBI digital video recovery team in the recovery and preservation of digital video through various methods including networking.  He has extensive training in multiple methods for computer crime investigation.
