Basic Police Surveillance

The use of surveillance can be a much overlooked tool in criminal identification and investigation process. Objectives and types of surveillance will be discussed along with the use of appropriate techniques and pitfalls of surveillance.

  • Participants will develop an understanding of the objectives and types of police surveillance.
  • Participants will learn the four levels of and techniques of moving surveillance.
  • Participants will learn the importance of surveillance notes and what should be on them.
  • Participants will take what was learned in the classroom and utilize this knowledge in practical exercise.

Required equipment: unmarked police vehicle (2 participants per), GPS if available, binoculars.

Instructors: 

Lt. Brian Warden is currently with the City of Burton Police Department. He has extensive undercover, investigative, and surveillance experience.  He has experience as a field training facilitator and completed previous surveillance training.

Sgt. Charles Iddins has been in law enforcement for over 20 years, currently with the City of Burton Police Department. He has been involved with the Flint Area Narcotics Group (FANG), experience as a field training facilitator and surveillance training.

Lt. Michael Odette is currently with the City of Burton Police Department. He has extensive undercover, investigative, and surveillance experience.  He has taught this topic in an extended three day course.
